Having eaten recently at Lemongrass restaurant in Lewes, i was dumbfounded. Having visited Thailand on numerous occasions, I found the food served to not be Thai but shoddy Chinese, at best.
Please, please we deserve better in Lewes.

Not sure about the authenticity of the food, but it's not worth what it costs. I imagine their overheads are high where they are but that's not my problem

We are heralded as an affluent town; yes, quite a few DFL but seriously my experience of Lemon Grass was appalling! expensive, poor quality food with no ambience. Come to think of it, where can you eat in Lewes that is good honest fayre whatever its ethnicity? With the advent of the new development/hotel where the magistrates were, I understand we are getting more cheap, franchised resto's - come on bring back Circa ! at least the food was enjoyable.

Eat what your wife cooks if it's good and tell her it it's not. Anyway I tried buying dinner in the White Hart before my cousin's wedding in this town 9 years ago and they made me unwelcome. Posh means filthy.

I like Erawan, the Thai place in Landsdowne Place. Reasonable prices and good food. But absurdly high rents keep independents out of Lewes. Unfortunately we are destined to have chains serving bland corporate food. It's a shame. In contrast Seaford has a growing number of good cafes/restaurants (And even the Newhaven industrial estate has L'Isola Buona hidden in its depths.)

Erewan gets my vote every time, beautiful food and a lovely family running it. It's a shame Lemongrass will reduce their custom.

Well Erewan was v busy Wednesday night. I expect alot of people will try Lemongrass once and then go back to Erewan. I certainly won't be going back to Lemongrass.

We love Erewan. Gave Lemongrass a shot but nowhere near as good as Erewan so we will not be using them again. We could taste the difference in the taste and freshness after the first bite. Erewan is the best Thai in Lewes hands down on Landsdown

Doesn't surprise me that this place is a poor attempt at 'Thai' food. Just another generic, faux-Asian restaurant, overcharging for bad food and service.
I've said it many times on here but Lewes needs a good, relatively unpretentious place to eat (which isn't a pub)...or even just a pub with a realistic, seasonal menu.

I ended up at Lemongrass this week, having failed to get in elsewhere.
I was really pleasantly surprised; I thought the food was really good, it was priced OK and the service was great (maybe a little over-attentive).
I can't really speak for its authenticity and I know everyone finds chains ununspiring but it didn't feel like a chain Italian.
I will probably go back, though it sounds like I might be on my own!

What happened to the Kings Head on Southover High Street? That used to be a reasonable eatery or have I missed previous postings on this subject?

I read the write up in viva lewes and thought the price was pretty high for what you got. Put that along side it being a chain has put me off even trying it. Erewan is delicious so they will always get my vote

The closest to authentic Thai food used to be the Pailin, but that is nowhere near as good as it once was. Have tried Erawan and it bore no resemblance to any kind of Thai food I have ever had and it was hugely overpriced. The lemon grass is the best of the lot but still not particulary good. I do think Lewes could manage a really good restaurant like Circa used to be. Why ever did they close? I have not tried Lime tree kitchen but when I look at the menu there is nothing on it that I would like to eat.

Erawan-had a takeaway a few times. Nice flavours but seemed to me they used very cheap chicken, tasted horrible with unpleasant texture.
I've tried lemongrass twice now and it seemed pretty good, and no more or less authentic than the other two. Certainly quality of ingredients seemed higher than Erawan.

It's crazy that there are no great restaurants in this town, how about a French bistro or a nice tapas bar please?

The pubs do quite good food; we're spoilt for choice with cafes. Chaulas is a very good Indian, a cut above the average curry house. The limetree is pretty good. BUt i'd generally agree, a town like LEwes should be able to sustain a larger, decent michelin-level eaterie. I suppose the proximity of Brighton and places like 42 degrees and 24 St George's suck a lot of would-be diners from Lewes. (Has anyone eaten at the restaurant in the Pelham House btw?)

I don't know what food you had in Thailand Cyclist, as in my experience, Erawan is by far the most authentic of the three (ie, the most like food I have eaten in Thailand). The food at Pailin and Lemongrass is still nice, and I would happily eat it, but just seems to lack something.

Really cheap chicken?

I have eaten several times at The Pelham House and to be honest the food is not bad but there is no ambience, one time, we were the only customers there. Goodness knows what has happened to Bill's; ordered their burger and asked for medium rare, it was served tougher than the leather on my old boots The inevitable cold chill food has made it to them, no idea what the chefs are doing in their whites!

Never have burgers rare. Rare steak has any bugs on the surface killed by the cooking process and no bugs really exist inside. Mince has bugs everywhere...

I'll risk the bugs thanks, rare burgers (or at least medium!) are infinitely worth the minute risk of eating a 'bug' compared to ruining good meat.

Nothing remotely authentic about Lemongrass. Agree more like shoddy Chinese and staff poor and disinterested. Please can we have a decent restaurant in Lewes. Tired of going into Brighton to eat.
