Just received a letter with a picture of my car outside Laura Ashley, from Parking Enforcement requesting 60 pounds for parking outside whilst I'm Laura Ashley. There have been previous posts about this, but wondered what the best thing to do was. Do not want to pay as there was clear signage! Any advice

My advice to all Lewesians re. parking in this dreaded spot, is get out the car, read the notices that are there but admittedly high up, get back in the car and Park Somewhere Else ! This is what I did when visiting from my home in a nearby village. I didn't know at the time that I was being recorded, but I can now chuckle at the thought of a frustrated P.E. employee viewing the tape.

Hi Alex
I just got the same letter, very angry about it. I stopped for less than 5 minutes on Sunday to buy some eggs from the market. All the lanes were empty. No ticket just a letter with a photo of my car on it. Is this the future of parking tickets, scary?

@Alex. I would suggest you read the previous posts there was a wealth of very helpful information, both from those who have been caught and those who have knowledge of these matters.
@ Mavis. Total agreement with you,but it looks like a place you can park your car and the signs telling you the penalties are 3mtrs off the ground,a perfect trap.

Exactly it looks like it would be okay to park for a few minutes, you are not made aware of the aggressive automated parking fine system that is in place. It should state in big letters YOU WILL BE GIVEN AN AUTOMATIC FINE IF YOU PARK HERE. Who is behind this, who owns that land?

I followed this advice after a fine an an Aldi. Never heard from them again. They CANNOT enforce these kinds of fines, they just ban k on those who pay without contest. Don't be one of them!

It's behind Laura Ashley, looks like its Laura Ashley's car park. Just been down to have a proper look. Whilst there an old couple drove in, oblivious to the private nature of the space, naturally I warned them. Laura Ashley said customers come in all day long complaining about being fined and the charity shop said they spend their whole day running outside to warn people as people pull up with stuff to drop off and are fined instantly. The warning signs are really small and high on the walls, the CCTV cameras are hard to spot. They must be making thousands a week out of this trick!

Moneysavingexpert gives the best advice..DO NOT PAY
So why do Laura Ashley allow the signs to go on their shop wall, unless they lease the property and the freeholder has done a deal with whoever is handing out these unlawful "fines".
There is one fixed camera on the north side of LA, but the other camera I cannot see, or does someone wander past regularly. If they have another camera fixed, maybe it is time to ask that property owner to stop assisting this activity

Norman I believe got the law changed regarding clamping on private land. That is what they used to do previously. There were cases of visitors from abroad getting their cars clamped. Now that they cannot clamp they photograph and fine.
I had correspondence with the owners sometime ago and suggested moveable / lockable bollards etc. However they were not keen on any more fitting solutions hence the contract to this parking company. For them it is the simplest way to ensure that those who are allowed to park there can. However these parking companies give there services free to the land owner and pocket the fines. That is why they are ruthless.

Good post, Merlin. It is the landowner who employs these gangsters, and in spite of Norman's hard work and success on the clamping issue, they continue to find ways to fleece the public. Am I correct that the landowner in question is Waitrose? Rumour has it that they now own Wenbans, the NCP car park, and the Laura Ashley building and access roads, in order to build a brand new, riverside supermarket. what would the Lewes Smugeratti make of such anti-social behavior from their favourite store?

It may be worth e-mailing the Waitrose CEO to check that Oldbutintouch. Just cut and paste some of the stuff here into an e-mail and ask him to look into it.

but i dont think waitrose owns the land, its the land lord of the charity shop, the volly, boots and laura ashley. a few years ago the then landlord of the volly complained that he had no access to the rear of the pub, thats when the permits were given out to the shops and access for deliveries only, he didnt find that satisfactory and thats when the clamping started

Your answer makes sense, thankyou. I can imagine the volly having a certain patch of land behind years ago and gradually it shrunk as it was sold off.

Being old, but in touch, I remember the original trigger for the Clamper's arrival. Many years ago, Waitrose complained to the then landowner, Norwich Union?, that parked Lucas made access for delivery trucks difficult - the landowner instructed the Clampsters, problem solved! (At least as far as Waitrose were concerned) Many years on, Waitrose have purchased most, if not all, of the entire site for their proposed new store - planning app. Later this summer. Should the persecuted motorists really wish to object to this gangsterism, they should protest to Waitrose. As I suggested in my earlier post, the Lewes Chattering Classes will not take kindly to this naming & shaming of their flagship store, but, they all ride bikes, don't they?
