Surely this is a market for the small producer who does not have an outlet nearby ? Have I missed something ? Or is this symbolic of the nations increasing selfish individualism and greed?

Laportes is local, well respected and entitled to have a stall at the food market.

I didn't know that there were any criteria in order to have a stall at the market ? I think anyone can apply for a spot.....

I agree , although it may be allowed ?! Just does not seem right when there's a shop 200 yards away

Bound to take custom from longstanding stall holders. Guess market staff need to consider whether this would be fair

where has that beautifully crafted green breakfast bar gone from Laports? I heard they didn't pay the person who made it, and that is naughty.

There are a number of mindless people writing on this site who don't have a brain between them. Independents in this town need support and if it means a stall in the market good luck to them.

Existing stall holders are also independent and local and have worked hard to build the reputation of the market and a regular customer base. Laportes have an outlet very close by and chose to move and expand with increased custom. To question their ethics and morals is not mindless when this could impact on much smaller businesses who also need to survive. It's is mindless when you try to dress up greed as something else.
Indicative of UK no thought, no blame culture.

OMG are some of you really serious! Get over your selves. I bet you have never had your own business and I bet most of you have never had a moment where you need to worry about how you will pay for life the next month. Get on with your pathetic lives where you feel that the only way you can contribute to the community is to bitch on a forum. I suggest that you should all meet in one place, meet us and then see how big you are without your keyboards in front of you. rant over!

Skittle - tell us about the business you run. I can't imagine you've got many customers with your strange attitude.

My understanding is the criteria for trading at a Farmers market is that you are not a shop. There are many independent traders / cottage industries with brilliant products who would die for a pitch so it is surprising a pseudo shop round the corner is blatantly allowed to breach this condition doubtless on some technicality. Shame on Laportes and the organisors on such blatant cynicism

But I thought it wasn't strictly a food market last friday - advertised as local makers wasn't it ? Also many people set up to trade down the precinct without any sort of licence ( I know at least one of the regular stall holders has never applied), so I think the town council are pretty free and easy about the regs.

It must prove how tough trade is in this town if shops feel the need to operate a stall once a week in the high street as well as having expensive premises. If they don't make money the town will be the worse for another outlet.
Mind you we can buy coffee in nearly every shop !!

Anyone else get the feeling that all these first time posters (chodbag, fiveinchheels, reluctant, confused, winter, funguy), are in fact just one disgruntled rival or ex-employee with a personal grudge?

Lots of moaning and whinging with no knowledge of facts - seems quite usual for this forum!
a) no one can be at the market without being asked or selected by the organisers!
b) market stall holders do not have to pay rent and rates like shops do, so if shop owners are given a chance to try and sell at both - good on them!
c) independent shops are what make Lewes unique and unlike all other high streets, thats why people come here so why on earth would you moan about people who are trying to keep a shop going - it's hard enough without being subject of hateful posts like this!
and yes i do own a shop in this town and yes it is really hard to make ends meet but i still love it and i know for a fact that other people do too! and there are probably some people who think Im making profit too - haha that would be nice!

To clarify matters on the green bar that I made for Tanya, it was taken out to make more room for more table and chair seating, NOT because of an unpaid bill!

Lets close this matter. To be correct the Farmers Market is held only once a month. Shops/cafes such as Laportes are important to this town. I am more concerned about the number of outlets that sell coffee and are therefore putting Laportes and the like under unreasonable pressure. And by the way a run a stall in the market.
