Does anyone know if there are any plans for a new business on the site of Laportes?

The left wing Guardianistas who frequented Laporte are so fickle. Laporte's' (not sure how to apostrophe that word?) web site is currently thanking all their loyal and valued customers. Not so loyal now are they?

I believe that Pestle and Mortar are going to open as a Noodle shop and very good luck to them.

Tim seems to be getting thumbs down from the Guardianistas of Lewes.
Seems they find truth hard to handle.
Shame about Laportes though - the food was quite nice

I'm not sure what's brought on such aggression? No one said anything nasty about Laporte's - it is just an enquiry. You seem very defensive about an operation designed to attract so-called Guardianistas, yet loathe the people who were loyal to it. Who has been disloyal? Interesting about Pestle and Mortar, thanks for that.

I have no axe to grind with Laporte's. I used to use it, particularly when it was on the opposite side of the street. I do however, have an issue with the clientelle who, especially on a Saturday and Sunday morning, treated it like their own room and looked over their newspapers to see who was daring to intrude.

Oh Tim my little darling snowflake. I'm sorry we didn't invite you to join us for a chai frappe latte. No need to be so precious about it though, just ask next time

I actually found the owners the most off-putting aspect. They were quite unfriendly. I'm still not sure who is supposed to have been disloyal - how can you be loyal to an operation that no longer exists? The regulars you describe - though I'm sure I wouldn't like them either - were surely loyal if they were consistently buying their coffee from Laporte's. Just seems a bit late to be griping about the attitude of customers of a business that has ceased to be.

@@Tim. The "Loyal" customers went elsewhere, hence my comment about being fickle. They have moved on to the next "must be seen in" place. Probably Cafe du Jardin?

A lot of people seem to have moved from Laportes to Fuego Lounge. Shame that a small independent has lost out to a chain but despite all of the noise that people make about wanting independent shops, they don’t seem to support them when they’re here.

I agree it's a shame but independent, though generally far preferable, doesn't automatically equate to better. There was often an odd atmosphere at Laporte's and an odd attitude. I loved the garden in summer, the food was nice but a less than warm welcome and stilted atmosphere can really put you off a place. @tim, I do see what you mean, but also question the whole "must be seen in" place thing. This is Lewes - we're hardly talking about Chiltern Firehouse, are we?

I went there occasionally if I couldn't be bothered to walk to Bills but the food wasn't anything more than ok and the prices were high. Last time I had scrambled eggs they were very runny. Not hard to get scrambled eggs right.
Still find it hard to do better than a Bill's breakfast in town, meat or veggie.

I remember when I used to go to Bills I got a scrambled egg that was totally solid and had not been scrambled. Bill happened to be there in those days who sorted it out. However now it is just another chain to be avoided.

They are probably scrambled/prepared then microwaved - very common in restaurants.

Small restaurant businesses failing in lewes the only ones doing it are the chains .drive by the fuago lounge or aqua any night they're heaving even at 6pm so a Wetherspoons with a sports bar would go down a storm .not worried about the dfls opinion of it there's more to lewes than them
