Labour overspending...

Miliband said in the debate on Thursday that the last Labour government did not overspend. Interestingly, Osborne agreed at the time. He said in 2007:

'Conservatives will match Labour on spending for the next three years: "I can confirm for the first time that a Conservative Government will adopt [the Government's] spending totals. Total government spending will rise by 2 per cent a year in real terms, from £615 billion next year to £674 billion in the year 2010-11. Like Labour, we will review the final year’s total in a spending review in 2009. The result of adopting these spending totals is that under a Conservative Government there will be real increases in spending on public services, year after year."'

So George's lips must have been moving back then. Lots of suggestions of Tory lip movement today.

How do explain the fact that the deficit was 40% bigger before the credit crunch cut in, 2007 than it was in 2000. Please note that the first 3 years of Blairs government Labour stuck to the previous Conservative government spending plans.

Blame the bankers!! The whole world was plunged into a financial crash due to the sheer greed of the financial services sector. How had to bail them out? The tax payer. Several countries nearly went to the wall. Were the Labour Government running them? No. Get a sense of perspective and realise that governments are pretty much at the hands of the major corporates. They are the ones that screwed us over, not the Labour Government!

Boris, how do you explain that government spending plans from 2007 on were so satisfactory to Osborne and the Tories that they planned to stick to them? Maybe the problem is, as Floating Voter says, what the banks did. Though why you're so concerned to ignore that and defend the banks I can't imagine.

Sadly Miliband seems to have bought the line that it is all Labour's fault and facing a clearly partisan audience he didn't correct those assumptions. Missed opportunity for him.
I will be registering a Green protest vote - I can't vote for any of the major parties and my experience of having NB as a constituency MP has not been positive.
