from what I rememeber the long room has been dogged by rumours of closure since it opened!
I haven't been in myself for a couple of months (the lattes are very good there and contrary to some opinions- reasonably priced) but it always looks busy when i walk past it.
If the owners are selling up, best of luck to them- lets just hope it won't become another identikit chain restaurant.

Yes, it does always seem busy, but I get the impression that they are still paying through the nose for buiding it - posh toilets et al.
The other rumour is that Nick, the owner is not 100% anymore and wants to sell it as the Long Room rather than cock it all up and have the bank and Bella Pasta snatch it.
Has to be said be said - he does look a bit frazzled these days.

it would be sad to see it go- if what you say is true, let's hope it can be sold as painlessly as possible and it can stay as close to the orignal.
i for one think the food and the staff are an asset to the town and would be very sad to see that change!
i know there are different opinions about every place in Lewes and not everyone will feel the same as me, but please rememeber there are a lot Lewes people working very hard down there and despite rumours of pretention i went in there with my baby (only tiny) and had a starter to eat and a glass of water (just wanted to get out of the house!)and everyone was as polite and friendly as if i had spent vast amounts of money- that is real customer service!! One of the wiatresses even entertained my baby while i popped to the loo- honestly, that doesn't happen everywhere

The food is so bloody bland. Don't get me wrong as a Lewes bloke, I'm happy for non chain, non italian restaurants to come to the town but honest, the amount of salt and pepper they cld save by flavouring the food or adding something risque to the menu. Chefs listen, make it interesting.

Seriously Bell End - who'd be a restauranteur?
I don't have any great sentiment about the Long Room, but half the postings on this site over the last two years have called the Long Room pretentious and bemoaned that it doesn't serve "good old fashioned British grub".
Circa pushed the boat out and fat lot of good it did them.
I reckon the Long Room positioned itself halfway and seems to do the job for a lot of people.
The Fat Duck isn't that far away for that "special occasion", but in the meantime the Long Room does what it says on the label.
They're in Michelin by the way.
