Anyone know what's happening to the house at the bottom of The Avenue by the paddock? Is it being dismantled? It was such a lovely house.

Nope; planning permission was granted last Summer during all the Brexit fall-out business. They're only extending into the Paddock by about 184 sq/m in total for the car-parking, so overall it has to be a good thing for the town.

More social housing can only be a good thing, there are plenty of people unable to get on the housing ladder due to astronomic costs.

Actually I think it's a real shame. It was a lovely house. I suppose some ugly modernist building will replace it

It's the first stage of the new Trump Tower, gateway to the Hollywood Casino Park development . Don't worry it's an equal opportunitey employer so there will be jobs for every persuasion. Eskimo guides for the ski slope,Kreen Akrore warriors selling tickets for the rainforest experience. Plenty of openings for women, but as yet their job descriptions are unavailable. Even a few jobs for locals in the Battle of Lewes re-enactment zone. There will even be a pillory for the most unpopular forum poster,so lots to look forward to, can't wait.

It's on the South Downs website, or it was anyway. I supported it, as they promised a parking space to a few of us nearest neighbours as a token of gratitude for putting up with the works. They're going to be high quality flats, which should attract a good type of resident, I hope.

So why are they building internal block walls if the house is being demolished and replaced by flats?

If you check the planning permission on the South Downs Authority website (through their public access) you will find that the permission for 2 The Avenue is to extend the ground floor and first floor. There is no mention of 21 flats to be constructed. They certainly haven't contacted any resident I know of on The Avenue to offer us extra or free parking. Also, the house will be like other other houses on The Avenue subject to Conservation Area and Unique Townscape Value directives so the planning is strict for any building in this area. I also think this building is maybe grade 2 listed as Bindens may be too, so highly unlikely that planning would have been granted. I think this is most probably a wind up, knowing how sensitive building is in Lewes.

I suspected it was a wind-up.
Not that the houses on that side of the Avenue are particularly architectural distinctive. Pleasant and large yes, but they're just the sort of identikit stockbroker mock tudor that you find in leafy 'burbs all over England.

That took a while! I love the earnest post from Caroline, clearly put out that she hadn't got a free parking space! Far more entertaining to wind people up on here than bother with the TV these days.
Perhaps the Paddock isn't as well-loved as green space as people think...
