Highways litter

I find it depressing that, when you drive along the A27 between Kingston and Southerham, there's an startling volume of litter - plastic bags etc - stuck in the trees and along the verge.
Anyway, there was a nice story in yesterday's Graun about a bloke who took the Department of Transport to court over the similar state of the M40, and won. The article is here: guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jun/20/motorway-litter, and the bloke's own website here: section91epa.org.uk. I wonder if it's worth threatening the Highways Agency.

I drive to Burgess Hill and Hurstpierpoint on regular occasions, I tend to take the scenic route through chailey then South Road, It is unbelievable the amount of crap on these roads, McDonalds packaging which must be kept in the car for months then decided to be tossed out the window, there should be more powers on this littering due to the danger of it being in the road

Most roads are the same. So is the riverbank next to Tescos

The riverbank near Tescos is an utter disgrace. Whenever the sun comes out people seem to sit there with an impromptu picnic purchased from Tescos and then just walk off and leave their litter. I don't understand the mentality of those people.

It's the same by the river at Barcombe mills. Absolute f******** tossers. In the summer dog-walking locals clear it up on an almost daily basis.

I think it is utter madness that Tescos will sell picnic items to people, who then sit on the riverbank to consume it, do not provide bins at that location.
Also why is there no bin between the two benches just along the path towards the playing field? Tescos and the local council need to be taken to task on this matter. Its a disgrace!

If people can walk to the riverbank with food, then they can walk to a bin. The main problem is the consumer. Should we expect to have a bin every 5 yards? We should take responsibility for our own litter.

It's one thing I would actually support a DNA database for. DNA test the litter and ID the culprits, then make 'em pay.
