East Sussex County Council in partnership with East Sussex Highways and contractors Max Gurney, will be resurfacing the whole of the High Street; from the Prison to the bottom of School Hill. In advance of the roadworks, Southern Water and BT will be conducting some essential maintenance repairs. It is important that they are conducted before the surfacing takes place to reduce the likelihood of having to dig up the new surface. Southern Water and BT will contact any affected residents and businesses separately leading up to the event on the 18 July. The surfacing works will then start from the 30th July.
When the work is completed East Sussex County Council would like to hear your views on how the work has been carried out. You can do this by viewing their online survey at: www.eastsussex.gov.uk/haveyoursay
Contact during the event is Steve Ellis on: 0345 60 80 193

Yes just like the Cliffe pedestrianisation had essential services work done before to save having to dig it all up again afterwards, because it hasn't been badly dug up and poorly relaid since. Guess this will take longer than Cliffe did as well (1.5yrs) - joy!

Knowing that Lewes has a tourist based economy why is it that every
summer when visitor numbers are at their height ESCC etc decide to dig
up the main street or part of it. If it has to be done, why not do it in the spring or autumn?

The more I learn about East Sussex County Council the more dysfunctional the organisation seems. I thought the ongoing parking and consultation debacle was a one-off but I'm beginning to wonder if the council is generally inept.

Increasingly I feel we would be better off with less tiers of governance.
