Received the other day the autumn edition of "Greenleaf", the Green parties quarterly newsletter. Inside there is an article about the decline of the bees and a quote from Einstein saying "Four years after the bees go extinct - we will follow them".
Speculation abounds about the decline of the bees - pesticides, virus, parasites etc.
Personally, I would like to return to the time when farmers were allowed to burn the stubble in their fields at the end of the harvest. I feel that this practice was very ecologically sound - pests are destroyed and the charcoal was ploughed into the ground to improve soil quality and help ensure abundant crops the following season.

Someone should burn your stubble if you think this would save our bees - we should badger the local council to create grants for everyone to set up bee hives in their gardens - we should find out where they are hibernating and set-up exclusion zones - we have protected newts, toads and slowworms - we should distribute little radio tags to all households so that people can tag the bees that are seen next season and thereby create an accurate census of them before it is too late - we should stop eating honey for a couple of years then they wouldn't have to work so hard for a while and get backup to full strength a sort of bee holiday

Larry - bee tagging is easy, I often do it whilst waiting for a bus.
Spinster - you can't mention smoke in this town!!! The last time I tried to have a bonfire I had at least 4 neighbours knocking at the door telling me I should drive to the dump every week (my argument that this caused far more pollution than bonfires fell on deaf ears).
