"US lobby groups for agriculture and pharmaceutical firms want UK standards changed to be closer to those of the US in a post-Brexit trade deal. The meat lobby wants the sale of growth hormone-fed beef, currently banned in the UK and EU, to be allowed in the UK. The farming groups say any deal should move away from EU standards, including rules governing genetically modified crops, antibiotics in meats, and pesticides and herbicides, such as glyphosate ... The lobby groups' priorities were outlined in more than 130 comments submitted to the office of the US Trade Representative." (BBC News, see link.)
The silver lining of all this, I suppose, may be huge shift away from eating meat, with the cost savings being spent on organic produce.

Fairly typical response from the leftie liberal elites looking down their noses at the working classes.
Oh it was such joy to see the withdrawal agreement sail through its second reading while the so called progressive lot still spouted there remainer bilge.

I'm glad it sailed through. Boris has nowhere to hide now, and has to deliver 5 years of Brexit negotiations and untangling 4 decades worth of treaties and simply can't blame anyone else apart from tory brexiters and himself. Boris's life is absolutely littered in incompetence. He "wins" these roles (Spectator editor, mayor of london, MP, foreign sec, PM), and then demonstrates total mis-management and buffoonery that lead to real life consequences. People seem to forget or look at the devastation he's left behind him. Something as profoundly complex as Brexit, shouldn't be left to someone like Boris Johnson....don't say we didn't warn you.
The past 3 years has been basically on the same level of division and national self-harm as over in the US with Trump. Its no coincidence that pretty much a majority of people in the UK routinely condemn Trump, and the ones that don't are people like Boris and hard-brexiters like Farage. It feels like a coup (both here and across the pond), but hopefully common sense prevails in the end and Trump/Brexit/Boris lose their dishonest, regressive populism and get removed......

Dream on.....how many elections have Labour won in the last 50 years? I see that awful Marxist Wrong-Bailey is set to take over what's left of the PLP. Haha. Great news for One Nation Tories.

@pink sleeves, the political system is rigged against everyone aside from the SNP in scotland and Tories in England. Its always going to take something significant to dislodge the ruling Party from power, especially when the print media is on their side, and the opposition is diluted into more political Parties.
You just have to hope, that like when Tories left power in 1997 after 18 years in Government, the country will be so fed up that the opposition will have a genuine chance. It will be 14 years by then, so fingers crossed.
And there is nothing wrong with any of the Labour Party leadership candidates so far, including Rebecca Long Bailey. If Boris Johnson can be PM, pretty much anyone else can be.

The trouble with the Labour Party is they can’t understand that just because the membership enthuse about their ideas, the wider population doesn’t.
At least if you belong to a Swingers Club, the members get it!

The difference is Boris understands his role is that it a salesman of feelings whereas Labour leaders since Blair have sought to be instructors or hectoring tutors.
People forget how much Blair was loved before his demise as a war criminal initially in former Yugoslavia and later Iraq.
Labour leaders have forgotten that older voters mostly haven't got the internal mindset that is created by an inferior university education. They need a bit less Gramsci and a bit more Carnegie and Cialdini perhaps.

I think Emily Thornberry was someone who recently complained about the use of inflammatory language in Parliament. Is that the same Emily Thornberry who has since described Boris Johnson as duplicitous, gutless, reckless, mendacious, lazy and a charlatan. Is it also the same Emily Thornberry who claims to have pummelled Boris Johnson every week?

Ah, Gramsci. He wasn't far wrong when he said 'The crisis consists precisely in the fact that the old is dying and the new cannot be born; in this interregnum a great variety of morbid symptoms appear.'

@Pink Sleeves- Since the end of the second world war, in peacetime and during the lifetime of most people, Labour have been in power for about thirty years. The Conservatives have been in power for forty five years- around half as much again. That would seem a fair description of the political mood of our country.
Anyway; lets' all adopt a "glass half full" approach- have a good Christmas, and look forward to a prosperous new year to all.
