Anyone grow blackcurrants in Lewes? If so what varieties and how do they perform? I'd like to plant a bush or two but read that mild winters can affect the crop and wonder if there are certain varieties that do better than others here?

I grow Ben Connan because it's more compact than most varieties and it's a heavy cropper. I've had no problems except for last year when the late frost's killed alot of the flowers resulting in a very poor crop.

Thanks Feline - interesting that frost rather than mild weather was the issue - though whether that changes in the future is another matter. We did have late frosts last spring I recall.

Ben Sarek is also good, even more compact. I think the key to success is plenty of feeding and quite vigorous pruning out of old wood during the winter.
