Funny noise

Can anyone explain the constant but very faint droning noise that went on through to night? It sounded like a distant aeroplane that never disappears, or something mechanical in the distance. (I even had scary visions of those machines from the (recent) film War of the Worlds, descending upon Lewes in the night!!!) It wasn't loud but just enough to be slightly annoying. I live up near the prison so I wondered if it was something to do with the construction going on there at the moment but there again, would they be allowed to make noise like that in the night?

There was a brilliant listener's story on Home Truths with John Peel a few years back. If you heard it you'll know the one I mean. It involved a constant faint droning noise...

If your near the prison, then maybe you heard the noise of prisoners drilling a hole out of the prison wall!

It was the mating call of the Lewes Pound. Not many people realise that both male and female pounds were created.
