I love Fridays. All of a sudden I can buy all the fresh food I need for the weekend (and start of the week) cheaply and near enough in one place.

Lewes Council have invited a greengrocer and french cheese seller to set up stall in Cliffe High Street on Fridays. Both are very good but the veg is particularly great, fresh, cheap and lots of it. Add this to the local fish and meat from the Riverside and it's food shopping heaven. For years I've been led to believe that supermarket food is cheap. Well it's not! The fish is from Newhaven, is generally caught the day before and costs less than the days-old stuff flown over the world by Tescos and the meat comes from a farm at Laughton and is both cheaper and much more tasty than the stuff at Tescos. Whats more, it's enjoyable shopping at the stalls. Can't say I've ever enjoyed shopping at Tescos, Aldi's or Waitrose.

It's like the scales have dropped from my eyes. Friday is now fresh food day.

"@Zebedee" With you all the way, remember please the market in the clock tower, wonderful food there. I also dislike the Super markets but regrettably sometimes needs must.

I'd like to see more stalls encouraged down the precinct. I agree, it's great to have so many good alternatives to the supermarkets. Apparently though some of the shops in the precinct have complained about the Saturday market affecting their trade. Nonsense of course.

Maybe the council will reduce all the bona fide retailers business rates in consideration for allowing stalls in the street competing with them. not a level playing field !!

Bleeding Heart - tell me what the competition is to stationery, shoe, fashion shops, book shops, chemist and opticians in the precinct from market stalls selling food? Even the riverside shops welcome the market as it brings trade into town and along the Cliffe that might otherwise go to a big supermarket. Everyone wins.
