I love the guys in the Riverside, but does anyone know if there're any shacks at Newhaven or nearby where you can buy fish straight off the boats please?

Do you mean Riverside in Lewes or in Newhaven? Coincidentally both have fish shops. The one in Newhaven is good, if you don't already know it.

I meant the Lewes one - didn't know there was also one in Newhaven. Is it the same? Ideally I want to find a simpler set-up. Thanks...

Simpler than Terry's Fisheries? You can't get much simpler than that. All Lee does is save you travelling to Newhaven yourself at 5am. The prices are pretty much the same as at the Newhaven place.
Support the Riverside's Terry's Fisheries. Possibly the best retail outlet in the whole of Lewes.

I don't disagree, but nothing beats the bargains and buzz of occasionally buying straight from the boats on the beach like you can at Hastings and used to be able to do at Bexhill...

Thats rather exciting Deelite, I think we shall get down there early and grab some of that. I had a go at fishing for Mackerel the other day, little success but I gather that you can pull them in from the beach usually

Hi Fishy, you won't be able to "bargain", you will pay the same price as you do at the Riverside, although I must say there's a better selection in Newhaven, well worth a visit. We stock up there once a month.

Never been impressed with Newhaven outlets. Best value and quality for me is Worthing Beach.

Buy your overpriced fish from the local Lewes fishmonger you miserable skinflint.....

The fish Terry's Fisheries at the Riverside is priced extremely reasonably. Not only is it as fresh as you'll get (all the local stuff is same day) but the price is generally much better than the ageing stuff from Tescos (and of course it's not worth mentioning Waitrose).
Paul. November is an odd time to fish for Mackerel. Try June or July when they come inshore a bit.

Thanks for all the advice guys, and the humour! At Rye and Hastings you don't actively 'bargain', but the boys-ashore offer a good bargain - eg 7lb of small local plaice for £5, 8 in-shell scallops for £5, that type of thing.
I agree that Terry's is just miles and miles ahead of supermarkets, but Worthing beach is precisely the sort of tip I was after - so thanks again!

Fishy I know what you mean but I too recommend Terry's as the freshest of them all (and some of it is really affordable). The NEwhaven joint was, I found, disappointing and not fresh, strangely.

There's a lot of not-fresh fish about, sadly. There's one hut in Hastings that always manages to sell "fresh" fish even if the boats haven't been out for a week due to poor weather!
Always check the colour of the gills - red not brown please!

Not very helpful - but loved my Sunday morning stroll along some little coastal villages west of Dieppe this summer, all the fish stalls next to the beach, aahhh..

You could always fish for your own and save the expense of the petrol, buy a rod in the Cliffe, opp Intersport, walk up to just past Willeys Bridge and drop your line there, never caught much more than eels myself but I have heard theres Mullet and Sea Trout to be had if you know how!!!!
