Is the Friar fish and chip shop any good?
I've frequented the South Street Fish Bar my whole life and fancy a change!

South Street is the best despite new ownership and weird queuing and paying system.

Nice chips but the portion size has halved.

Didn't the Friar get 1 star out of 5 for cleanliness in a recent post on this forum?

Friar absolutely fine. Nice chips, generous portions. And when did people get so wussy about hygiene stars? It all gets deep fried at a zillion degrees!

Someone at a Brighton chippie recently got a deep fried cockroach. Zillion degrees or not, I wouldn't fancy that.

We've given up having fish and chips since South Street changed hands. Their fish is nowhere near as fresh as it used to be under the previous owners.
We tried the Friar but weren't keen on their fish either.
I hear good things about the chippy at Denton corner, but ime fish and chips don't travel well. They seem to get soggy and steamy after a while.

ACT, the trick is to tear a little hole in the paper wrapping to let the steam escape so that it doesn't make the batter soggy. Honestly, try it. We do it every time and have the crispest batter every time.

Chips at south street okay. Fish urggh - batter too thick. Previous owners were also awful fish.
Friar equally bad. Why can't our local fish shops use fresh fish straight from the boats at Newhaven. Both Lewes chippies use frozen fish which is dull, grey and frankly horrible in thick batter that is always soggy on the inside
