I see Change.org has a new petition to fence the River Ouse. Good idea or not? Let’s hear the arguments.

It’s a no brainier if people are going to fall in, all rivers should be fenced from source to sea and don’t get me started on roads they should just be banned altogether

Some people on Lewes Present are demented. A candle vigil for a stranger to the town who either was so drunk they fell in a river or who chose to end their life. Hopefully the post mortem will reveal what was in his system. I feel sorry for him and his family but get a grip people.

My grandad discovered a man's body down the Pells 70+ years ago. He never got a candlelight vigil and there was no public outpouring of grief. He probably got 2 lines in the Sussex Express. Of course it's tragic and full condolences to the bereaved. But tragedies happen and fencing wont stop them.

If we do this logically we'd have to fence all rivers from source to sea and fence off the beaches and cliffs too, just in case someone who's had too much to drink is around. I understand the wife in question is grieving but this is pretty mad stuff isn't it? How high/fortified should the fence be? Railway style palisade fencing? Razor wire?

What a complete ridiculous idea fence the river I’ve never heard of anything so silly in all my life.
What would the lately departed Jim the Fish made of all this seeing as the river Ouse was his life ?

I see the heartless keyboard warriors of Lewes keep themselves to this group rather than Lewes Present.
As a friend of Anthony I can completely understand why his family or friends have called for this petition. Obviously we can’t fence off every danger in this world and everyone had the right to their opinion on this topic but to be disrespectful about the candle light vigil is just disgusting.
The search for Anthony and his story clearly touched a lot of people so why shouldn’t they be able to pay their respects?!
Overall I’ve seen the Lewes community as selfless, kind hearted people, it’s a shame most on here are showing otherwise.

Yes, some of the comments have gone off topic and are disrespectful. However, I presume there will be an inquest and if the Coroner uncovers evidence that says lack of fencing was a factor then I am sure it would be addressed in the Coroner’s Report.

Last time I went down there at Bonfire the fencing was metal road pins and netting and certainly wasn’t secure. Maybe it has improved - what fencing are you aware of Old Mayor?

I empathise with all involved, it was such a tragedy, but I really can’t see what there is to be fenced. The lane going ahead to Tesco and other rural areas have a significant grass ledge even after the slope so it would take a lot for someone to slip off the path and fall in, the rest is fenced within the town and you would have to out of your way, through wooded areas to find an ‘open’ area with a short ledge. And why would you go through these areas and not stay within the lights of the town no matter how much someone has had. It’s not that people don’t care, it’s that people who live in Lewes know the area. The only compromise is to risk assess the area of the incident if thats possible, whether the rusty house or the ?railway centre is it?? has CCTV

I’m guessing many of the 1900 or so names who have signed the petition do not come from Lewes. Some haven’t even got Anthony Knott’s name right and many are quoting “too many lives lost in this river”, “so many people die in one place”, “another life lost this week”, “can’t bear to read that another person has lost their life”, “2 people in the same week is ridiculous” etc.
Now I know why people are so concerned about fake news.

The only areas I could think of are the wall outside the JHT and the NCP car park where you could *maybe* accidentally fall in, but you have to go a bit out of the way to get to those. As mentioned the bit by Tescos has a long grass bank before you get to the water, so hard to see how you'd stumble over and fall in unless you were already well onto the bank? I wonder if we'll ever find out what actually happened to this poor man.

FFS. Obviously, the Bonfire fencing is only temporary for the event, anyone who lives in Lewes knows that. But my point is that it IS considered dangerous enough to do it. For the sake of complete idiots, it's only the stretch from the road bridge to the store, completing the stretch that's NOT already permanently fenced by a very short length by the car park exit/entrance.

Accidental death from falling into a river is extremely rare, especially given the firefighter was young and fit. I doubt the cause of this tragedy was a lack of fences.
