THE government has announced funding for new FREE training courses for the over 50s in Lewes.

The courses start later this month at the St John Ambulance Hall in the town, and now is the time to get registered.

The subjects are creative writing, IT, web design and music through technology.

The sessions are designed to provide an informal way back into learning for those aged over 50.
The project is funded by the government's Transformation Fund, and is being provided locally by Shaping Voices, a not for profit organisation.

A total of fifteen courses will be run throughout East Sussex, each giving five days of training to 12 learners per course. Places must be booked in advance as they are limited.

The end result will be the creation of a website in March 2010 that will feature the creative writing and music of those involved, and to anyone else aged over 50 who may wish to contribute.

Other partners in the project are Age Concern, East Sussex County Council, East Sussex Library Service, Care for the Carers and Sound Architect (Music and Film) Ltd.

These are the courses:
- Creative writing, suitable for beginners or those with experience. All you need is a pen, paper and enthusiasm.

- Introductory IT, understanding your PC, dealing with emails and websites, and producing letters and documents
- Website workshops, how to develop and maintain your own website

- Music through technology, creating your own music through digital technology.

The first IT sessions, all 10am to 4.30pm, start in November:

- Eastbourne, Community Wise, Ocklynge Road, November 16, 23 and 30 and December 7 and 14.

- Bexhill, St Peters Community Centre, November 19 and December 3, 10 and 17 (Final date TBC)

- Hastings, Southwater Community Centre, November 18 and 25 and December 2, 9 and 16

- Uckfield Civic Centre, November 20 and 27 and December 4, 11 and 18.

The first Creative Writing course is being held at the St John Ambulance Hall, Lewes, on November 19 and 26, December 3, 10 and 17, and January 7, 14, 21 and 28. All are 10am-1pm apart from the last day which is 10am to 4.30pm.

Further dates for the other courses will be published shortly.
