The assembly can be going well until one of the girls gets tearful, which starts a few of the others off. If parents are invited there are usually a few tears from them as well. In one school at least, there is the added emotional blow of the Year 6 leavers being clapped out by staff & the whole school. as they make their way up the corridor for the last time.
