Anyone know the latest on the Egret's Way, supposedly linking Lewes and Newhaven by way of the Ouse Valley villages. Seems some landowners don't want to play ball, and the whole scheme, as far as I can tell, is dead in the water (or 'parked' in modern parlance). Anyone know any more?

Hyphens apart, it seems to be a pity if it just remains halfway built - that would be a waste of money. The idea to me seems a good one, a route for walkers and cyclists that doesn't involve either being mown down by the motorists speeding on the C7, or causing accidents to the motorists as they overtake cyclists on bends (the C7 is mostly bends)

Use the cycle lane and not the road and maybe they'll extend the lane.

Even when it is completed egrets way will be just a leisure path for mountain bikes. Anyone who wants to cycle from Lewes to Newhaven will still have to dice with death on the road. It cannot be beyond us to put a proper cycle path alongside the road.

How about cyclists pay a road tax of some sort and a proportion of that money could be used for new cycle paths etc?

Anyway, back to my original question: does anyone have an update? Last autumn a solid path was laid around the back of the Lewes recycling plant and underneath the A27 bridge, right up to the gate for Rise Farm. Is that part of the Egrets Way, or some other development?

Aren't river fronting property owners in Piddinghoe the problem? (Though this is hearsay.) They don't want their privacy disturbed.

Took quite a while for the short cycle path to Ringmer to be completed, but it got there in the end and is now pretty well used. You need to keep pushing.

The path has recently been completed just outside Piddinghoe and runs to Southease Bridge. It then continues as a hard surface until roughly parallel with Rodmell where it reverts to grass.

I believe the Rise Farm owner doesn't want the path to cross his land. It's the same guy who tried (unsuccessfully) to have the part of Cockshut Lane that runs from the A27 bridge to the Kingston Rd opened for traffic, so his huge farm vehicles and the tenants of his industrial estate could use it.

.Yes it it will be for the small amount of mountain bikers . Pedestrians have the "raw deal", they have to get out of the way of cars on the road and cyclists hurtling along the cycle path. Also what is the point of the traffic island on Kingston Road?? traffic still speeding along there.

I'd like to know when motorists get a chance to speed along the C7, Frustrated Egret.
I've done 3 trips each way this week so far, and slow moving traffic has meant I didn't get above 40mph on any of them.
I was only held up the lads in lycra on one trip though, so I supposed that makes up for it.

motorists speed along the Kingston Road all the time, the traffic island will prevent them from overtaking but not speeding, there is still plenty of space for the cars to reach well above the 40mph speed limit. That is another waste of money.

Yes, there is a footpath, although pretty impassable in winter where it's not been given a permanent surface. I for one would to ride my hybrid bike down to Rodmell or Newhaven - and then linking up to Tide Mills and beyond - all year round. Any idea why the landowner at Rise Farm, if it is them, objects to a cycle path crossing what is clearly unproductive land?

From cockshut lane bridleway there are only bridleway rights on the lane under tunnell to cockshut road this is a highway to cockshut road for everyone. Ham lane is a private access down to rise farm and not for public use as heavy vehicles etc use this area as stated by rights of way. It is not part of egrets way as this ends at stanley turner entrance to river.. Farm vehicles can use bridleway at all times and have codes. for gates. what community spirit there has been at this location I suppose were not posh enough for the likes of kingston and cranedown as they say money talks. So sod the rest of lewes 220k so far spent on crossing and cycle track. There dogs sh-t all over fields where club plays football etc they dont want cars parking to spoil there view or cycle path and no bonfire to be there this year if they can stop it which I'm aware they have already complained to council. If you want anything done live in these 2 villages.

Local landowners being a royal pain in the bum just because they can is nothing new. The turreted entrance to the Clayton railway tunnel had to be built at great expense to placate a local farmer back in the 19th century. Lots of silly railway stations had to be built (such as Rowfant) to serve a single house because the landowner wouldn't play ball otherwise. In France they just draw a line with a ruler and that's where the TGV line is going.

It's still a work in progress. As I'm sure you're aware, trying to get several land owners and official authorities to agree, takes a lot of arranging!
The route is open from Ham lane to Rise farm. From there to Southease is also open, but is not surfaced at the landowners request. From Rodmell to Southease, the route is open and surfaced already.
The surfaced stretch from Southease to Deans place farm has an official opening date of May 14th. Hope to se you all at the opening?
The last link in the chain is the Piddinghoe to Newhaven, which is still being sorted.
There has always been footpaths along the river to Newhaven, so there's nothing stopping people on foot enjoying the river. We're just trying to open up the environment to all people, whether on foot, bike, or mobility carriage. These things take time.

There is no cycle track from Ham lane to Rise Farm or Rise Farm to Ham lane it for vehicle and Heavy lorry use only and a private access as agreed by Matthew Harper. From Cockshut Lane Use of Pavement only and up New steps into car park is the boundary for cycles and walkers check with Rights Of Way at Council. Thats why steps have been put in what more do you want.
