Whitegates dairy? Peter Nicholas and his family ran the business delivering milk from Falmer to and around Lewes. They had a cold store opposite the YMCA and a shop beside the YMCA . They lived in South Chailey and sold the milk rounds to Cornfords dairy before moving to Portugal in the 1980s

Did they have an office on school hill? It might have been an antique shop later and after that ,the lib.dems' office

The Milkfloat was I believe green and it had a real engine unlike the electric offerings used by Southdown Dairies. The sales office was indeed on School Hill. The family owned property in South Chailey, a site that is now Whitegates Close, it's between the old old Swan Pub and Mill Lane. The date given of the 1980's can probably be narrowed down a little, My first house was in Whitegates Close, purchased off plan from the builder. We originally moved in Mid Feb a few weeks before the Chernobyl disaster. So that dates it as being 1986. Completion on the purchase having been during the latter part of the previous year. Ours was one of the very last houses finished so I'd say building commenced during 1984. Which gives a suggested date of moving to Portugal of around 1982 or 83 allowing for sales, planning permissions etc.
