Language has always evolved and changed. You don't need to use these figures of speech yourself. To address your specific points, options suggests that by picking a particular option you are precluding other options. I'm not sure choices is quite the same. I hadn't noticed within but I presume people use it because they think it sounds more important. So is used to buy thinking time. One that annoys me 'at this moment in time' is substantive for substantial. Are they different?

I'm extremely offended that "ye" seems to have drifted into being "you". And then "thou" went out the window! Where will it end? In chaos and depravity.

Basil , you’re forgetting your particular favourite, leaders instead of managers.

There is a new manufacturer currently advertising power tools on television. The name is something like "MonaMona" (I can't remember exactly).
They refer to a basic electric drill as a "hole-making tool".

Well,Nevillman, there is one difference. "Substantive" can mean "noun".

Thank you idm. Is my problem that it is misused or that I don't understand the difference I wonder. Nice to hear from you on here or anywhere idm. I hope you are well and still finding somewhere to dance.

Well Nevillman, with live bands illegal in pubs (singing and shouting spread it!), no open mic, no karaoke, finding it hard to keep 2m apart from other dancers and getting out of breath making moves in a mask - I am in terpsichorean lockdown until I persuade Boris to put us in Tier 0.

Well Mark, if you took a look at your gospel in the King James Bible (still widely used), you would see plenty of "thy and "thee". Also in the usual version of The Lord's Prayer.

Are you sure you've got that right - an ancient and out of date book was written in ancient and out of date language?
You got anymore of them pearls of wisdom?

King of Sussex. I agree ancient. And I accept out of date, in the sense that no-one would now use it creatively (including everyday speech). I was trying to claim that language is still "used" even if only in repetition/quotation, as long as it is still understood. For example, in Somer is i-cumin in (is that right?), I would still sing "lhude" rather than "loud" - and people would know what I meant. Also "Noyes Flude".
Sometimes usage changes in the other direction, eg "chortle" (in Jabberwocky).

Basil - in means as a point in an area, within means in a range. So, his house is in Lewes. His house is within half a mile of the Lewes/Kingston border (could be in Lewes or Kingston). "What a fantastic lap! He must be within two seconds of the UK record." "He must be in two seconds of the UK record." (?)

Another help (?) Basil. "Options" means available pathways for selection, "choices" those selected.

King of Sussex, I have thought of a much better example - "We wunt be druv.", again from an archaic dialect. But on beermats at Rights of Man, a common exasperation against (especially official) unwanted control, understood by most county residents and featured in a recent poem. If that does not count as "in use", I despair.

Sorry, forgot another big support. My example is used widely at Bonfire.
