Dishwashing

Has anyone else experienced aluminium cooking utensils coming out of the dishwasher with a weird grey film on them, which rubs off on to hands and indeed food? This has only happened recently, and I'm tempted to blame a recent switch to Aldi dishwasher tablets.
Any help gratefully received...

It is dried Horse sweat. Apparantly this is not a food safety issue. Try saddle soap tablets instead.

Discolouration of metal is simply natural oxidation. This is especially so with aluminium items which will become naturally dull over time if washed in a dishwasher.
There is no treatment for this and the damage is irreversible.
Aluminium should not be washed in a dishwasher as most manufacturers user instructions will point out.

Aluminium is a highly reactive element, which naturally oxides on its surface very quickly. Acid ingredients like tomatoes and vinegar will dissolve it and leave the metal temporarily bright. Some of the more powerful ingredients in dishwasher tabs will undoubtedly do the same, and react with the exposed metal to form some new compound. As Sparky says, don't put them in the automatic dishwater. Get the manual dishwasher to do them

Absolutely. Google Aluminium Poisoning. Sounds to me like the population of Lewes is already suffering the effects.

I got rid of all my aluminium pans years ago after reading about the poisoning effect. I use an old 80's set of of Vision pans no which still look like new.
