Much to my surprise, given comments made recently by others on this forum, I was pleased and surprised when I received this reply from ESCC regarding abuse towards cyclists legally cycling westward:
"In response to your enquiry received on 22 March 2019. I am very sorry to hear of your recent incident whilst cycling in Cliffe High Street.

As I am sure you are already aware, this TRO prohibits any motor vehicles from using Cliffe High Street, except in an easterly direction where there are exemptions for access too: marked disabled bays (blue badge holders only); Harvey's Access Lane (Harvey's staff); Bear Yard (residents only); Argos Car Park (Argos staff); signed loading bays. Westbound travel is not permitted for any motor vehicles. Cyclists are permitted to travel in both directions.
In light of the complex TRO, concerns have been raised regarding the road signage and markings, and although improvements have been made in the past, I am pleased to advise you that there is a proposed scheme, which includes reviewing all the signs and lines in the near future, in a hope to make the restriction more clear to both drivers and cyclists. I can also assure you that the team taking this forward will be working very closely with 'Cycle Lewes'."

I don't really want to see any cyclists any where on our roads unless they are delivering my morning paper. Thankyou very much.

Hmmm, I emailed ESCC about exactly the same problem on 14 March (one of more than a dozen abuse/road rage incidents over recent years by drivers illegally using Cliffe High St, when I'm quietly and legally bicycling west), and have had no reply at all! Cycle Lewes also urged me to write to various councillors etc, and so some action is now happening. It's a problem of un-noticeable and confusing signage at the Railway Lane entrance. I'm delighted to hear your news, @Ferret.
And Biggles, on Cliffe High St bikes are allowed but not most cars, so that street must depress you terribly every time you go along there.

Sorry to hear it, fatbob. I suggest you report the incident to Jo Reed, the Senior Traffic and Road Safety Officer at ESCC using this email address:

Every complaint will help to get the improvements so clearly needed.
