Crossing the road

The change in the highway code last month means that I can now walk across a road coming off a main road at the junction, knowing that any driver will give way to me. Has anyone actually tried doing this without looking first and attempting to catch the eye of the driver to ensure they will stop for you? Good idea in theory but without some kind of road marking and an intense advertising campaign to re-educate drivers I can only see it leading to more cars hitting pedestrians. I nearly got hit by a car the other day.

The one about bikes is worrying too. Cyclists, even me on occasion, overtake on the inside in slow moving traffic with very little clearance between them and the cars. A legal nightmare.

This is a common misinterpretation of the Highway code changes when the media hype them up. The wording in the rules is 'should' not 'must'. Drivers 'should' give way to crossing pedestrians rather than 'must' give way to pedestrians. If you cross a road without looking, expecting a driver to stop, the chances are you'll get hit by a passing vehicle.
