Just saw something run across in front of the car in Ham Lane: 6-8 inches long, no tail to speak of, red-brown fur (same colour as a red squirrel). I wouldn't call it short-haired; it was furrier than that. Slightly chunkier legs than a rat - the body was a bit further clear of the ground. Any ideas??

So that's what it was then? Flattened in the entrance to the Pelham Arms car park. I kid you not! The crows were having a nice dinner

Cheers SQ, that looks about right. Fortunately, it didn't rip my flesh.

I presume it was the same creature that you saw, but I saw it the other day down by the leisure centre. Its shape and gait looked really peculiar, so I stopped and waited for it to come closer. It turned out to be a grey squirrel that has lost it's tail. It does have a definite reddish tinge, but then grey squirrels often do.

It's the Lewes Beast. Someone call the Daily Mail quick and mobilize the Sussex Police dangerous animals squad. I will tell my story of the Lewes Beast for £200 000.
