When the Tories pull East Sussex County Council out of Lewes will it still be the county town?

we need to do whatever we can to STOP yet another desecration of our town by this withdrawal - so hopefully your question is apocryphal...
but hopefully the Courts remaining here will allow us to hang onto our quaint label now that "market town" is no longer truly apt either

No - it won't be. It could also lose the Primary Care Trust, Ambulance headquarters, Sussex police and all the other public sector headquarters that have based themselves in the centre of Sussex, once this thread starts to unwind. The Tories haven't costed the move, but when other county councils have moved offices its cost taxpayers tens of millions of pounds.
There would be a resultant loss in trade for the shops and other services in the town so I would guess that Lewes would look a lot different five years down the road.
The Tories want to replace county hall with 600 houses - so something for the planning obsessives to get excited about too.

Lewes House looks to be well under way now too
can we petition this Webbo ASAP and forward to approproiate parties?
will National Park help fend off the uneccessay development of County Hall - does the proposed replacement site have as good public transport access as Lewes - and motorway connection too come to that?

Lewes, like Salisbury, won't be the county town any more when the county council moves to Polegate. But there's no reason to assume that it won't keep the assizes - Salisbury has. The Police would be mad to move their well equipped HQ which is conveniently located for East and West Sussex and access to Brighton and Gatwick. Why would the health authority move just because the county council had gone? All the evidence is that these bodies rarely cooperate with eaxch other. Why would anyone object to County Hall coming down and 600 homes in its place? 600 homes would easily replace the trade lost from relocated council staff most of whom commute into Lewes and shop elsewhere because of the parking scheme.

On a purely aesthetic slant, the skyline of Lewes will improve, if nothing else.
PS Will Polegate now become the 'County Town'?

600 homes - 600 - Six Hundred homes, so that would be 800 to 1000 new residents, all with...
doctors needs
teeth needing dentists
drinking water requirements
waste water disposal needs
policing requirements
general waste disposal requirements
shopping needs
and most with parking needs
public transport needs
hospital requirements
yeah no problem, except Lewes cant't seem to provideant of these for its existing population - no problem - great idea
