I'm about to take the frankly terrifying step of buying a house for a first time and knowing absolutely nothing about the process, am in need of a good conveyancing solicitor although by good, I also mean cheap.

Does anyone have any recommendations locally?

I've twice used Lewes Smith on Albion Street and found them to be very good. Helps that they are local too. lewessmith.co.uk 483455

Absolutely no reason for conveyancing solicitors to be locally based. Try Emin Read in Battle - much better value than firms in Lewes, unsurprisingly.

Hi
I'm a rival conveyancer and Clive Smith (LewesSmith) is comfortably the best of the names recommended here imo.
Good luck

The thing about conveyancing is that solicitors have to stretch it out to justify their fee. I witnessed a house being sold in Enfield, North London viewed at 10.30 am deal signed and finished by approximately 7.30pm that evening.
In Hastings I again witnessed a large 4 storey house sold late one evening and the following day it was sold to a solicitor who then sold it back to back to another party, 3 sales in 24hrs!!!
Finally on a property I once purchased I asked the solicitor what was holding matters up and was told the search, I immediately said I would go to the local town hall and speed things up, panic by the solicitor who managed to get one of his staff to produce the said search 1hr 40mins later.
No wonder I am cynical when it comes to conveyancing.

I've posted before after a horrible year of trying to sell and buy. In the end I ditched my lawyer and went to beverley ogden.
They've been great - dealing well with some nightmare situations both in the sale and the purchase. I now have a lovely house and a sold flat.
Really recommend.
