The prize must go to Ground. Coffee is good but the clientelle are something else. Its the way they look up from their Guardian and give you the "once over" before whispering something to their companion/s.

That's odd! Do you know any of the staff or their parents? Where are you from?

I have to agree with OP. It's like you're walking into someone's private domain rather than a cafe.

It's a bit out of the way, probably full of locals, too lazy/rich to make one at home !

Got charged 2.80 in needle makers for the smallest (takeaway) cappuccino ever! My fault for not checking price first but with the attitude she had, you would have thought I was robbing her, not the other way round! Never again

@? I go there because the coffee is good. I always get a takeaway though. Ground also have a coffee shop in Kemptown and the clientele there are completely different.

I reckon it is round my place. Pretty much anyone other than me or my missus gets short shrift. Somehow they just don't come up to the mark.

The Waitrose crew always make me laugh, when they're queuing up and the coffee machine is out of order. 'What do you mean I can't get my free coffee!?'

Coffee shops are just like alcohol free pubs. Locals sitting in their usual seat, looking at the 'strangers' as they walk in the door. A pint of coffee cots about the same as a pint of beer too.

Is there really nowhere in this town anymore where you can buy a cup of instant in a mug to go with your bacon sarnie?
Or is that the next retro thing to be brought back at an exorbitant price?

Daisy's is good for your simple coffee and bacon sarnie, wouldn't say it is particularly cheap mind.

Flint Owl in Lewes does a lovely cup of coffee. They ground there own. Plus there cakes, pastries & food in general is pretty special & staff are all really nice. Get in early though if eating in, as not allot of seating.
Suprisingly the Wickle in Lewes has very good coffee. Takeaway though rather than drink in (Sorry Wickle), as seating is a real squeeze & lots of little'uns running about, so not a place for a quiet coffee & a book.
