I just wanted to say I think Cliffe high street is going to be fantastic when it's finished. It's looking really good already. Well done whoever planned it.

A 'looks alright' would have been sufficient.

they are putting down cobblestones and barring motor vehicles - will look just like it did at the turn of the (last) century - thats what they call progress - and at what cost?

All very nice but must all the shops also go back to the turn of the century or could we have a few that don't sell musty old junk, cups of tea or fripperies.

I'm with Webby on this one. I think it is shaping up rather nicely. Lopster, I reckon banning traffic from the bridge to Morris Road, and at the same time making the remainder of Cliffe High Street two way, will actually improve access to residential properties. It is now much easier to travel by car from the Cuilfail tunnel, from the Offham Road or from Malling Street to Morris Road, Farncombe Road and Foundry Lane than it was when the whole of Cliffe High Street was one way. Walking up Cliffe High Street will become easier and more pleasant, so long as certain emporia do not extend their shop front onto the now wider pavements ...

Although "shaping up rather nicely", the so-called "improvements are going to interfere with Cliffe & South Street Bonfire processions. In fact there are new H&S issues to consider - new trip hazards are being created and the police will have terrible trouble keeping the crowd out of the procession.

On a brighter note, the cyclists won't be happy with the cobbled surface (ha ha). Does anyone recall a letter to the Expresss a couple of years ago (from a female cyclist) requesting that Cliffe Bridge be tarmaced as the surface was uncomfortable for her when she cycled over it?

I hadn't considered the repercussions for bonfire night.
