My dad left when I was 12, a few weeks before christmas. Christmas has never been the same since. I think my childhood ended that day. I can hardly bear the weeks of build up to christmas. It brings nothing but sadness.

That’s very sad but you’re not 12 any more and you’ve got an opportunity to turn it into something better (and happy). Go for it and make it into something special.

I also associate Christmas with a difficult time, and dread the build up to it too, can't say it's easy but just know you're not alone and others feel the same. Hope it's a better one for you this year

I'm sorry to hear that @sad.
My dad left us too, after an affair, when I was 3. It wasn't at Xmas time, but nonetheless I've always felt sad at Xmas simply because he wasn't there anymore. Xmas is all about being with the ones you love. I loved him and wanted him back, but he was gone and I never saw him again.
I don't have an answer for you, but just wanted to give my example so as to let you know you're not alone in your sadness.
@happy - it's just not that simple. Emotions are complicated.

You don't have to let sad things that have happened define your life. So destructive. It is your choice. Take the initiative. Read Psalm 55, v.22 and find a way forward.

It's not just one day a year though. It's weeks and weeks of build up, every TV advert, stuff in the supermarket's, people banging on and on about their Christmas plans and asking you what your plans are.
For the Christmas dreaders, the depression sets in late October and doesn't lift again till mid January when it's well and truly all over.
