This is a delightful café/restaurant hidden away on Malling Street in Cliffe, behind The Dorset, recently reopened under the current name and management. Run by enthusiastic staff Andreas, Lucinka and chef Peter, it must be the most friendly, welcoming eatery in Lewes. Don't be misled by the slightly cramped layout as you walk in the door – there is plenty more space downstairs – and if the sun is shining the outside seating area is sheltered and interesting, as you are surrounded by antiques. Lovely fresh home-made cakes and pastries are on offer to go with the heavenly coffee (the carrot cake is to die for). At lunchtime a mouthwatering selection of dishes is on offer, always including an excellent choice of vegetarian options. Le Café du Jardin is rather off the beaten track but it is well worth taking the trouble to seek out – enjoy it now before the rest of Lewes discovers it and it becomes hugely busy!

Went there about a month ago. It was about 2.00 pm but they said they had run out of food so we just had a coffee and a piece of cake. It was ok. But the proprietor was so loud I think he wanted the whole street to hear what he had to say. Overall not impressed.

I have visited this delightful restaurant on two occasions and will certainly be going again soon. The team are so welcoming and the atmosphere within the delightful courtyard setting makes it a real experience. With such good food, I am sure this new enterprise will become one of the towns, must visit eateries.
