Inside knowledge:
Order your carpet through the local carpet ships (I recommend CarpetRight) but don't buy carpet gripper and underlay through them - this is where they mark up massively.
Typical gripper price in Lewes shops is £1.69 per metre. You can order it online from Wickes for £0.37 per metre.
Luxury underlay - £11.99 (let's call it £12) per square metre from CarpetRight (cheapest). Online, exactly the same is available for £7 per square metre.
On a decent sized room, by ordering your carpet retail in Lewes but your underlay and accessories online, you can save £150-£200, even with delivery charges.

My top tip is to look for offcuts first. The rooms in many houses are so small, you can often get a really decent wool carpet offcut that is the right size for around £100 or less.

@James
Where online can you get luxury underlay for £7 per square metre? How would I know it is the same quality as carpetright's luxury underlay? And how do I work out the square metres of my room?
Am about to buy a carpet, am on a tight budget, and am very interested to read your post.
Will carpetright fitters fit underlay that I have purchased myself? Or am I bertter to buy the carpet then find a private fitter I wonder?

10% discount at County Carpets with a Rooks card. Can add up depending on size of order, obvs. (I have no connection with them, btw, other than as a previous customer).

Autumn last year I posted on here regarding carpets. I was advised to go to Pennells in Uckfield. Best advice ever received. Local quotes £1500 - £1800. Same carpet supplied and fitted by Pennells OWN fitters for £1000. Bargain. Plus, I didn't have to pay until a couple of weeks after fitting.

@Kinell, absolutely no complaints whatsoever. Pennells do a lot of contract stuff (hotels, offices etc) and are just so professional.
