Why on earth aren't they using two way traffic lights instead of closing the town to incoming bussines, if there is a valid reason (I can't think of one) then why not open cliff high st for the duration of the works. The bunch of twats that make these decisions don't seem to realise that they cost local pubs, restaurants and taxis there peak trading time. Does anyone know how many more weekends it's gonna go on for? I know the signs say 3 but if I'm not wrong this is the 4th weekend!

If it is the East Sussex County Council Highways department then twats is not a strong enough word. Criminal might be better.

I've been told that the ESCC Highway department top echelons are receiving 7% pay rises... whilst those lower in the ranks are being asked to take pay cuts and reapply for their jobs. It strikes me that if the top echelons are responsible for the actions of this lousy department then they ought to be fired rather than being awarded pay rises at this depressed time.

I walked through the town at just gone 13:30, and there was just one car and a BT works van parked on School Hill. Hope the shops get compensated for the lack of trade, which is obviously the fault of the roadworks.

Compensation! A simple apology and promise that they won't do it again would suffice, but thats just me being a bit dreamy. MC is there nothing we, the public can do about these pay rises?

As the town seemed to be heaving with groups of visitors today, many on conducted tours, I imagine takings would have gone up rather than down for many businesses. It'll be interesting to see.

We can make a fuss. These people work for us. We pay them! It is unacceptable that in times of extreme cuts that any of our employees should be getting pay rises. It is especially gut-churning when the lower orders have been given pay cuts and are being asked to re-apply for their jobs. It would be much more in keeping with the times for the Director and Assistant director of East Sussex County Council Highways department to be taking a pay cut and being asked to re-apply for their jobs.... at a reduced wage with reduced benefits (i.e. juicy council pension).

Do you have any concrete proof of the pay rise and staff having to apply for their jobs or is this just "a friend of a friend told me" type gossip

A little more direct and reliable than friend of a friend but sources cannot be revealed etc etc. I'm working on the concrete publishable stuff now.

Southern Gas has dug up the Lewes Bridge for gas works, their work is expected to finish on October 28th. I pass their mess every day; and no one is ever doing any work! Why should our town live for two months with this eyesore, what a disgrace.
