A teenage asylum seeker is fighting for his life in hospital after being beaten in a “brutal attack” by a gang of eight youths at a bus stop in Croydon, south London.
The boy was with two friends late on Friday night when he was approached by the gang, who demanded to know where he was from. After replying that he was seeking asylum, the gang chased him and launched their attack.
The teenager, a Kurdish Iranian, was left lying on the ground unconscious. Scotland Yard said he suffered a fractured skull and blood clot on the brain and was in a critical condition. The other two youths suffered minor injuries. His attackers ignored pleas from witnesses to stop and ran off only after hearing the sound of police sirens.

This is supposed to be a Lewes forum. Hence it would seem reasonable for most threads to be about Lewes LOCAL issues. Are you suggesting a forum about football or computers or wildlife or cooking should be dominated by rants from EU obsessives? Because on any other forum that I have used, these endless EU threads would be removed and the perpetrator told to s0d off.

The estate where it happened is a vile place, even by Croydon's low standards. And Croydon has a long history of racist attacks, and links with the far-right.
One of the founders of the National Front lived there, and someone left the NF a property that later became a "nationalist bookshop". In the early 80s, the police raided the premises, looking for 2 thugs who'd beaten someone up at a local pub, and found it being used as a safe house for 2 Italian nationalists who were on the run.
Sadly, Brexit has created a climate where xenophobia and anti-immigration sentiments seem more legitimate, and I think we'll see more of this sort of thing.
Hope they catch the low-lifes who did this, and lock them up for a very long time.

@ ACT. Agreed. While racism and bigotry has always existed in this country (but thankfully declining due to more progressive attitudes over the past couple of decades), the Brexit vote certainly empowered the racist attitudes and behaviour of a bygone era. Hate crimes have increased since the referendum and really set the country back years. The media outlets that have spun up this "us vs them" campaigns during the Brexit referendum (The Sun, Mail, Express etc etc), and ever since, are partly responsible for fuelling this ignorant behaviour. This certainly isn't excusing the moronic culprits/individuals themselves who carry out these crimes. They are too stupid, naive and aggressive to just be good, decent people unable to avoid dangerous lies, fear and propaganda. Hate breeds hate, and brings nothing positive for modern society....why can't they see this? Its surely a mental deficiency, putting it as diplomatically as possible.

@ factoid. Yup, all the more reason to adopt the model in states like Colorado, where legalising cannabis has smashed the black market to pieces, reducing overall crime and heavily diminishing the drug cartels influence and criminal activities. On top of that creating a new regulated industry employing people fairly, and generating billions in tax revenue to pump back into public services (subsidising the elementary system). Its also REDUCED the rates of cannabis use in teens. Its a total win-win. In every place where cannabis is legalised and regulated, it makes a total farce out of places who still cling on to prohibition of the plant.

*takes a bow* thank you, thank you.

Did you read the latest research where Data taken from more than 1,000 US hospitals found that people who used the drug had a 26 per cent higher chance of suffering a stroke than those who did not, and a 10 per cent higher chance of having a heart attack.
Cannabis itself is harmful to cardiovascular health and increases the chance of early death regardless of related factors such as smoking tobacco, new research reveals.
They indicate there is something intrinsic about cannabis which can damage the proper functioning of the human heart.

By buying your stash pedr0 from a dealer you are directly contributing to criminals including those involved in human trafficking. Do you feel smug about that?
Cannabus is associated with mental illness although people who feel the need to take it could well be predisposed to mental problems.

@ factoid, I don't buy it from a "dealer", I buy it from a friend who grows a couple of plants in his apartment for his own use and a few select people. Its in no way some sort of criminal network that you wish it to be. There is no human trafficking, slavery, meth lab or anything sordid that you have in your mind with him.

But as I've said before, legalise and regulate the drug, and the black market diminishes significantly. This has worked in the US, and there is no reason it wouldn't work here.

@ dull - smoking cannabis (be it by itself or mixed with tobacco) might well have some negative effects, which is why i've always advocated vapourising and using it with edibles. Even with smoking though, its likely to be far less significant than compared with tobacco, considering tobacco smokers tend to smoke a lot more frequently.

Please share with me the research and happy to take a look at it.

@No Kristallnachts - How depressingly prectable of you to seize upon this tragic event to add weight to your ongoing, tedious obsession with Brexit. I suppose we should at least be grateful that on this occasion, you've posted a genuine opinion rather than a fake right wing one.
Racist attacks have increased since the referendum, but would a Remain vote have stopped them? Surely it's more complex. The sad truth is that there have slways been horrid, racist incidents in Britain. It seemed to be getting better after the hideous attack of Stephen Lawrence in 1992, but post 9/11 Islamophobia and a large increase in immigration have added more fuel to the fire. Surely Brexit was partly the symptom rather than the cause?
But for those who are too young to remember the murder of Stephen Lawrence and the popularity of the NF in the 1970s, this latest attack will just be used as tool to moan about Brexit.

@ seriously. Yea yea, you've told me this for the past 6 months, and it seems you can't accept I'm not going to be bullied off this forum from your repetitive and baseless personal attacks.

Cannabis, whether you like it or buy into it being the devils-plant fake propaganda, is also here to stay. Millions upon millions of adults throughout the world, including in the UK, will be enjoying using the cannabis plant, be it on occasion or a frequent basis, and without some slide into mental, physical and social oblivion that you deem is the only conceivable passage. I mean you no ill will, so try to not let my posts wind you up (i.e ignore them), and just enjoy the beautiful rare sunny day and weekend.
