Another child has reported being approached by a man in a black car this morning.
The 12-year-old is the fourth child to be asked if he wants to get in the car with the stranger close to a school.
Police were called at 7.53am and told that the boy had been approached in Test Road, Sompting, by a man who opened the car door and asked him to get into the car.
The boy ran from the area and returned to his home nearby.
The man has been described by the boy as driving a small black car, white, bald, of big build and a with a croaky voice.
On Tuesday an 11-year-old girl was approached by a man in a black car at the junction of Abbey Road and St George's Road, Brighton, and asked if she wanted a lift.
The previous Friday a ten-year-old girl was approached by a man, again, in a black car, believed to be a mini in Wilbury Crescent Hove.
Days before that another young girl said a stranger had talked to her in Patcham.
Officers are today in Sompting trying to locate the man Detective Inspector Russ Sheppard of Worthing Response Investigation Team said: "The boy did the right thing by leaving the area immediately, going to a safe place and telling his parents what had happened.
"Although there are three incidents in the Brighton area which police are investigating regarding men in black cars offering lifts to school girls, the description of the man in this report is not consistent with those.
"Police have received an increase in reports of suspicious activity after schools and the media have reported on these incidents and police have been visiting schools to talk to the children about how to keep safe."
Anyone with information about this incident or any others is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 246 of 21/7 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
