Its a public event which has been going on for Donkeys.
If you come, you come at your own risk.
If you bring children under 12 and stay out on the streets
after 7pm, you are a total cork sucking icehole.
Its about taking responsibility for yourself,
staying alert, using your common sense as my old
man used to be fond of saying.
Lets hear no more. One year, some dickhead is
going to get really hurt and sue everyone's asses off.
The powers that be would love it at close it all down for good.
My opinion is, keep on putting people off coming as much as
humanly possible via press, radio, t'internet etc.
and leave it to the local yokels to enjoy the mayhem.

Can't argue with that. By the H&S standards of public events in Spain: Pamplona; Tomatina; Las Fallas, and the Palio in Siena for example, Lewes is pretty mild really.

I totally mis-read that as 'Lewes Annual Hand Writing Competition'. Perhaps not as exciting as Bonfire but surely safer, despite the amount of poison pens in Lewes if this Forum is anything to go by...

Ha ha ha! I love that idea! Completely with you on the poison pen. It's a lot easier to be nasty anonymously than face to face. All human life is here. Scratch the surface at your peril or perhaps light the blue touch paper and stand well back............

Someone else, have you been to the Palio? I went to Siena twice and learned about the event but have not made it back yet. The most beautiful cathedral I have ever seen is there.

CSI - Sadly not; only seen it on the telly. But given a choice between catching a rookie and being clattered by several hundred pounds of thoroughbred horse at speed, I'd definitely take the rookie.

Don't light any blue touch paper for Christ's sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's what got us into this mess...

I used to live near Siena. The palio wan't the only dangerous local event.
On Shrove Tuesday (or - even more scandalous - on Ash Wednesday), folk used to drop bangers through letterboxes.
