Hi,
We're new to Lewes and are looking for a part-time accountant for our building company. Not sure if this is the right forum, but ideally we need someone local who understands the construction industry and CIS/payroll. Thanks in advance.

Pick up a copy of Viva Lewes (lots of shops, pubs, galleries etc have them, free) and look in the small ads. Also Sussex Express (website or paper). And welcome to Lewes.

Hello Nicola,
Welcome to Lewes, to both you and your company from another business owner.
Try Andrew Wells, Western Road (top end of High Street).
Do you do little building or just big building?

Yep, I can second the recommendation of:
Andrew Wells Accountants, in Western Road.
He has given me helpful advice, efficient service, and all at reasonable fees.

We use Knill-James, and are quite happy with them. They have various clients from the construction industry (including some well known Lewes ones). Being the largest firm in Lewes they have a spread of specialists which we find handy when we want to get correct advice on any accounting or tax related matter quickly. I'm sure they are not the cheapest though (and it's certainly worth questioning their initially quoted fees).

They handle our the returns for our limited company and property management LLP, along with VAT, payroll and personal tax.

Most accountants round here are very good and there are plenty listed in Viva. I personally would avoid Knill James like the plague having seen some of the work they've produced in the past. I'm not going to suggest they're universally awful but I've seen some stuff come out of there with seemingly very little grasp of quite basic concepts (Like how to fill in a VAT return).
