Once upon a time there were two newspapers in Lewes: the Sussex Express and the Sussex Advertiser.
Only one of them supported Bonfire.
See if you can guess which one didn't?

Bonfire Boy is quite right. The Tories and their Lewes newspaper, the Sussex Express, supported Bonfire. The longer-established Liberal Sussex Advertiser was bitterly opposed, and the young Liberals of the town, especially those who worshipped at Tabernacle, lined up to enrol as special constables to help the Liberal magistrates suppress the celebrations. Tabernacle, then the best attended church in town, has been demolished too.

Thumbs down for historical facts on this forum!
The "progressives" of 1847-8 didn't like the traditions of Bonfire any more than today's politically correct brigade. They had the forces of law and order on their side then, but they still failed miserably in their attempts to suppress them.
