A good reason not to vote for your existing district councillors....

Maybe this is probably one of many reasons why many LibDem District Councillors can't be bothered to defend their seats across Lewes. Time for a new broom at District Council!! Time for some decent opposition against the Tories who want to sell off as many public assets under the noses of council tax payers! Why the secrecy?

Unless they have plans to replace the flats at Saxonbury with some other temporary accommodation, this will mean more homeless families in B&B, and having to stay there for longer.

Up to now the lack of talk on the selling of the 49 sites has been a good indicator of how this has all been kept quiet by certain individuals. Some who will not be standing again for elected local office (can you work them out) and those who have been 'dropped' into a nicely paid £100,000+ a year job from a totally independent council. Not forgetting the individual who removed the charter to be paid no more then ten times the salary of the lowest worker.
It's not hard to find the works outlined on the selling off of council property - just go through the list of buildings owned by LDC. Here's one for starters, enter the south down national park code below to see the work outlined to remove the gardens from Lewes ('belonging to the people of Lewes District') house. ....

If the link does not work then go to planing portal page on the South Downs national park website. There is more there to download for your viewing pleasure . As there are other documents, emails and photocopies about district financial 'practices' in the coming days..... Keep your eyes peeled folks , if democracy fails us......

I agree with you all on the dire lack of transparency. It's hard to give a definitive answer on this without all the details being made know. But Labour policy, if we were elected to the District Council, would be to get the right balance between obtaining  best value in financial terms and best benefit to the community - if it is necessary to sell off public assets at all (such as St. Anne's site and North Street Quarter).
We are committed to transparency in strategic planning and decision making, not decisions made in a closed Cabinet without full disclosure and the opportunity for a public conversation.
Part of establishing that balance would be questioning what plans would be brought forward to replace public assets like Saxonbury and St Mary's? Annette CT is right - a sell off if Saxonbury without a local replacement would cause untold hardship to many families who would undoubtedly end up in potentially more costly, longer term B&B, in places like Seaford, a distance away from families, friends and the community support structures they know. The social cost and impact of a sell off should not be ignored and should be part of a public debate about all properties owned by Lewes District.

The new crowd are in ... Let's see if they can do some digging. If not let's hope they can absorb the reputational fall out of being associated with the council.
Turns out that it's not only the bankers who can 'accidentally press the wrong button' and collect a whole record of emails and computer documents from the council's computer systems.
oops!!
