Resist patterns suitable for Indigo dyeing (online)

In this online workshop, learn how to create exciting resist patterns, perfect for indigo dyeing. This workshop is suitable for those who took the introduction to indigo workshop or those who know the basics of indigo dyeing and want to learn some resist dyeing techniques. Participants will create a variety of experimental samples incorporating techniques including folding, binding, clamping and stitching. Most of the materials and equipment will be supplied. If you have an indigo vat you are encouraged to bring it to the session to dye your samples.

Lucille Junkere is an artist, educator and textile researcher specialising in botanical and ochre pigments and embroidery. Her research focuses on the legacy of colonisation in African Caribbean textile history, through which she explores themes of loss, grief and cultural reconnection. In November 2020, Lucille completed a Leverhulme Fellowship exploring Jamaica’s colonial indigo plantations. In April 2017, she completed a Winston Churchill Fellowship to study indigo dyeing and pattern making amongst Yorùbá artisans in Nigeria, building on her work as Artist in Residence at the William Morris Gallery London conducted in 2016.

To be provided by the museum and included in the cost of the workshop:

1 metre of 100% cotton (shirting is ideal) fabric per person must be thoroughly scoured before the session
I reel of Shibori thread
1 Sharps needle (size 5 to 10)
Round Wooden Circles x 2
Wooden Craft Sticks 25
Double Knitting Yarn 1 per person
Participants to provide:

Pencil for marking fabric
Pencil sharpener
Ruler Scissors
Marbles or plastic buttons or plastic beads or plastic bottle lids (around 50)
Plastic pegs (around12)
Thick rubber bands (around 50)
To allow the museum time to purchase all the necessary materials for this workshop there is a cut off booking date of 2 weeks before the workshops takes place. Bookings need to be made by 25 June.
